Soldados, 2022-2023

The Mexican-American War of 1846-48 is regarded as the inaugural conflict in the history of war photography, which subsequently emerged as a potent instrument for the propagation of political ideologies. It is notable that this war, which occurred at a time when the recently invented daguerreotype had not yet been ideologically shaped, represents a singular exception to this trend. The paintings in the Soldados series acknowledge this by superimposing a Mexican and an American soldier on transparent gauzes.
