About me
Sandra del Pilar (b. 1973, Mexico) deals – in her paintings, objects and installations – with the phenomenon of transparency, which the artist understands as the place where the private and the political meet. With the transparent synthetic fibers she uses in her works, she materializes dream-like scenarios from the collective and personal memory, overrides our idea of (image-)space and (linear) time, interweaves inside and outside, the world of images and the viewer's body and thus enables another look at the political and social events and conditions of our time.
Sandra del Pilar has been working as an artist and art theorist in Germany and Mexico since she graduated in painting from the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City. She earned a PhD in art history from Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, and a practice based PhD in fine arts from the Faculty of Art and Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She became a member of the prestigious Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte in Mexico with a three-year working grant from FONCA (2019-2022). In Germany, Sandra del Pilar had scholarships from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes and the DAAD. She has also received funding from the LVR (Landschaftsverband Rheinland). Her artistic work has received several national and international awards and is in the possession of museums and public and private collections. Her work is represented by Ziilberman Berlin/ Istanbul/ Miami and has been shown at painting-biennials as well as in solo and group exhibitions in Mexico, Germany, Turkey, France, Belgium, China and Bolivia. In December 2019, a documentary film by Sergio Sanjinés about her work premiered at the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City and was shown at various film festivals, especially in Latin America, as well as receiving awards. In addition to a series of catalogs on the work of Sandra del Pilar (2005, 2008, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2023, 2924), her texts and essays have been published in international magazines, anthologies, catalogs and newspapers.
